The GEIPP Viet Nam project is part of the Global Eco-Industrial Parks Programme (GEIPP) of UNIDO. Launched in 2012 under the Global RECP Programme, GEIPP supports countries in transforming traditional industrial parks into eco-industrial parks (EIPs) by enhancing environmental performance, promoting innovation, and aligning businesses with sustainability objectives.

Viet Nam embarked on its eco-industrial park journey in 2014. This initial phase, the project Eco-Industrial Park Initiative towards a Sustainable Industrial Park Model in Viet Nam (2014–2019), was supported by the GEF, SECO, and UNDP, and jointly implemented by the Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) and UNIDO.

Following this milestone, the project Eco-Industrial Park Intervention in Viet Nam – Perspective from the Global Eco-Industrial Parks Programme” (GEIPP I, 2020–2024) was launched, with continued support from SECO and implementation by MPI and UNIDO.

Currently, the programme has advanced into Phase II: Scaling up Eco-Industrial Park Approaches to Promote Circular Economy in Viet Nam (GEIPP II, 2024–2028). Building upon the solid achievements of GEIPP I, this phase drives transformation at every level: shaping stronger policies, empowering local ecosystems, and equipping businesses with the tools to lead a more sustainable and resilient industrial future.

The overarching objective of GEIPP II is to promote circular economy approaches in industries, helping industrial parks mitigate climate impacts and adapt to the negative consequences of climate change. This is pursued through scaling up resource efficiency, minimizing waste, promoting recycling, and enhancing the economic, environmental, and social performance of businesses, thereby contributing to inclusive and sustainable industrial development within a circular economy.

The project is expected to deliver key results by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, enhancing energy and resource efficiency, and promoting the use of renewable energy for a low-carbon industry transition. Enterprises and industrial parks will adopt better practices, mobilize investment in cleaner technologies, and strengthen capacity among policymakers and managers. At the policy level, updated regulations and stronger institutions will provide a solid foundation for scaling up eco-industrial parks and integrating circular economy approaches in Viet Nam.
