Amata Industrial Park, established in 1994 in Bien Hoa City, Dong Nai Province, is a joint venture between SONADEZI (Vietnam) and Amata JSC (Thailand). Spanning 513 hectares with an occupancy rate of over 95%, Amata is a multi-industry park that serves as a hub for diverse investments, encompassing high-tech manufacturing, food processing, textiles, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, and logistics. The park is currently home to 168 operating companies, including 152 foreign-invested enterprises from 15 countries.

To date, Amata has attracted USD 3.4 billion in investment and created more than 60,000 jobs. Strategically located just 32 kilometres from Ho Chi Minh City and close to major seaports and airports, the park offers excellent connectivity for investors. Its modern infrastructure includes a reliable power supply supported by a 160 MVA transformer station, a water supply capacity of 32,000 m³ per day, and a wastewater treatment plant with an average capacity of 6,000 m³ per day (expandable to 12,000 m³). Additionally, Amata is equipped with comprehensive communication and logistics facilities to support a wide range of industrial operations.

Joint in the project since 2020

1. Initial Assessment

Amata has been a member of the GEIPP Viet Nam Programme since 2020. The initial review against the International EIP Framework showed a performance score of 41%, highlighting the need for significant improvement. Key priorities identified included park management, water and energy efficiency, climate change mitigation, and social management systems. At the time of joining the programme, no industrial symbiosis models had been implemented in the park. By addressing these gaps, Amata aims to strike a balance between resource conservation and economic competitiveness, and has the potential to achieve 97% performance under the international framework.

2. Identified Solutions

3. Results Achieved

In spite of existing challenges, by July 2023 Amata had implemented 60 RECP solutions (38%) and planned 37 more (23%), resulting in annual savings of 1.87 million kWh of electricity, 28,182 MWh of renewable energy, 27,817 m³ of water, a reduction of 1,588 tons of CO₂, and economic benefits of about 6,600 million VND.

Regarding industrial and urban–industrial symbiosis, Amata identified 13 IS and 4 Urban-IS opportunities, with 9 high-feasibility projects prioritized, including wastewater reuse, recycling initiatives, shared platforms, renewable energy, and joint use of firefighting resources. If implemented, these projects could achieve 1.1 million m³ of water savings annually, reduce 19,002 tons of CO₂ equivalent, create 43 new jobs, and generate around 5.76 billion VND in annual savings.
